I am a retired Medical School Professor of Internal Medicine and Hematology. Understanding the human body is a passion of mine. During all of these years I was a full time professor at medical schools in Texas and NYC. But I was also always interested in “making things,” Throughout my life I’ve sewed clothes, pillows, bags, and even stuffed animals. But then I sequentially added quilting, smocking, and dye painting on fabric to my passions. When my three children were married I even dye painted and quilted a 6 ft square silk wedding chuppah for their weddings. Almost at the same time I began to keep watercolor sketchbooks of my daily activities.

I filled watercolor sketchbooks quickly but learned how to make bound books with 140 lb cold press paper. I have filled over 100 sketchbooks, and drawing and painting are now part of my retirement life. My love of the human body led to figure drawing sessions, and for this project I transferred my figure drawings to fabric using dye painting methods. This piece was made from my drawing of a Pregnant Model at The Society of Illustrators in NYC. To make this small quilt I transferred my figure drawing to fabric and painted it with Procion MX dyes before collaging it to the background fabric, on which I painted a Mother and Child from a previous sketch. This is one of 7 quiltlets that I made to explore multiple methods of transferring drawings to fabric for quilting.
